About Probus Women's Housing Society Limited

Happy Woman at Probus Womens Housing AssociationOur History

Probus Women's Housing Society was formed in 1948, to provide good quality affordable accommodation for single working women at a time when inequalities of pay and the rules of financial institutions forced many women into sub-standard housing.  Following the end of the Second World War housing stocks were low and building materials in poor supply and single women were discriminated against when it came to decent accommodation.

Realising that safe, secure and affordable housing was a necessary first step to stability and forward movement in life, the Society was established to develop housing especially geared to the needs of single working women.

In 1949, the Society opened its first building in Southampton. There followed over the years the acquisition of a further seven properties with the last being Whittlesey, near Peterborough, which is a combination of a converted Victorian building with a new purpose built extension bringing the society‚Äôs total portfolio to 39 housing units.

The Society is incorporated under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965-1978 Reg. No. 135375.  It is regulated by the FSA and remains a not-for-profit organisation allowing all surplus income to be reinvested into the properties ensuring a steady programme of property maintenance and gradual expansion.

Probus Women's Housing Society maintains financial viability through its proactive and sensible governance.

The Society is governed by a Board of Directors, all acting in a voluntary capacity.  Our Directors are experienced practitioners in their chosen field of expertise, and their diverse skill sets and business acumen helps to provide the ongoing strategic direction of the organisation.

With an annual planned maintenance programme we ensure that the properties are maintained, refurbished and improved on an ongoing basis to a quality standard.

Membership to the Society is by the purchase of one share which has a nominal value of one pound and carries a right to vote but is not dividend bearing.
